The Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Exposition is a 501(c)(3) educational, non-profit organization that operates exclusively for the promotion of science in middle and high school students within Orange County, Florida. We pursue this goal by  organizing a science education competition (more commonly referred to as a science fair) for Orange County students. Our science fair is affiliated both with the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public. As a result, winning students from our competition move on to state and international competitions.

 

Putting on a science fair is a labor of love by many volunteers. However, there is a significant cost that must also be incurred to successfully produce a science fair. It takes about $40,000 each year to produce the fair and this does not even include in-kind contributions from several organizations which defray the cost of the facilities used for the fair. About 90% of the $40,000 goes towards prizes for the students as well as covering the costs for the students to travel and compete in the state and international fairs. The remaining 10% covers out-of-pocket costs required for administration of the fair.

Our costs are wholly subsidized by contributions from private individuals and companies. Other than the in-kind contributions we do not receive any funds from either the public school system or any other governmental unit.

 

About 40% of our total budget is donated by our principal sponsor, Dr. Nelson Ying.
